Herbs and My Practice.

Hi Readers,

Lately, I have been researching a great deal of herbs. I have been interested in herbs for a long time as part of my practice as a Pagan and Witch. However, I have yet to work with herbs. I would like to discuss how herbs play a part in my practice.

At one point in my life, I considered studying a type of medicine. I have always been fascinated with the way herbs and plants have been used medicinally. For example, anytime I am sick I drink chamomile tea, and peppermint. I have several books on the subject detailing the medicinal uses of herbs. Then, when I began studying Paganism and Witchcraft, I saw a large majority of books refer to herbs for all types of uses. From magickal brews, potions, to tinctures, and everything in between. I have read the uses for using rosemary for protection and virtually in any spell, I have read about sage for cleansing, and the use of frankincense for all forms of incense from purification to banishing. All of this said, I have two reasons why I do not work with a lot of herbs at this point.

The main reason I do not use a lot of herbs in my practice is because I want to understand how herbs grow from seed to plant. I have a few gardening books I have been taking my time to read making it a point to thoroughly research for the time being before I dive in. However, I did try growing herbs before, and I struggled to keep them alive. I overwatered them on accident so I have decided to wait until I can really understand the process and when I have more time. Furthermore, I find the study of herbs quite difficult. I am finding that some books contradict so I have found myself simply studying herbs from reputable sources both magically and medicinally.

The second reason I do not use a lot of herbs is because I like to learn about herbs from a medicinal standpoint as well as a magickal one. Also, I take my time to read about the uses of each herb including how long they last, along with how to burn them safely. I feel that through my research I can take what I have read and apply to what I may experience.

So, what herbs do I use? I mainly use sage in its dried form for cleansing. I use it with respect to where it comes including culturally. Further, I use it in some of my incense recipes when I am working certain spells like purification or cleansing. Sage is not that main ingredient, but it is one of them when doing a cleansing. Also, I use what dried herbs and other spices I have in my kitchen for making incense for protection such as rosemary. Further, I have used frankincense for a purification ritual. I did a lot of reading about each herb before I incorporated them into my incense recipe.

I hope that this gives you an understanding of how herbs play a small part in my practice. Do you use herbs? If so which herbs and why? What resources do you use?
