Some thoughts on Am I doing this right?

Hi Readers,

Recently, I have begun exploring a new form of energy work. I will have a separate video and blog regarding this topic. However, this exploration caused me to consider something I have found to be a struggle within my personal practice since I first started. The struggle being that I tend to question like many people am I doing this right? Where this is can be anything from raising energy or something simpler like meditation.

I feel like this question gets mentioned more so for beginners rather than someone who is been practicing for more than a year or longer. I feel like I always question whether I am doing anything right. This does not have to be a bad thing. I feel like people talk about how experimenting within one’s practice can really benefit you. This is something I had to learn.

I have always tried anything once. Especially, when it came down to my practice. I have discussed elsewhere why I do not use spells from books not that it is wrong to do so. This is because If I did not try it once I would not be able to tell If I did it right. Also, I find that If it works and I achieve results then I must be doing something right. I realize that for many this is not always the case. This is also not something to be concerned about If it does not work, just because something does not work out the first or even third time you try it does not mean you are doing something wrong. Depending on what you are trying out it could simply mean you may have to try it in a different way or at a different time altogether. For example, one of the first things I struggled with was Casting a Circle. I found that in all the books either they had several ways to cast a circle, or something did not feel right when I did it. I felt like I missed a step somewhere in the process. Of course, I recognize that not all paths or practices include this in their practice of Paganism or Witchcraft. If this is the case, then insert another situation. What I learned from the experience, was I tried one way described with just visualization no words as this are one, I learned from a book. I tried this for the first few rituals. Then, I tried using both tools and words the next time I tried casting a circle as part of the ritual. Also, I tried at a different period for instance during a Full Moon instead in the middle of the day. Not that this is always important in the step I am just providing an example.

Another aspect I struggled with for a time was meditation. I know I have discussed some of that on the blog a while back. However, I have an active mind, so I found that certain types did not work for me. I had to attempt more than once for a certain length of time such as for a week or more to figure out what works. Also, I had to try different types of meditation like no guidance, some guided meditations, mindfulness, etc. for a shorter or longer period depending on the types in addition to the steps above.

The main point with this post is to get people to understand that in my view I believe that we as practitioners cannot be certain If we are doing something right. Sometimes you must experiment, attempt one aspect of a practice for a time, or in different ways to see what works. The only exception I would give is that If you are in a tradition or you are being instructed by someone then try it out that way until you get it right and follow the guidelines you are given.

These are just some of my thoughts surrounding the question am I doing this right and about experimentation in general.

I discuss more in the video below:
