All about Community

Hi Readers,

Lately, I have been participating in a lot of virtual events. Many of them are unrelated to the practice of Paganism.  However, I have been participating in one group that is focused on spirituality in addition to other topics. In doing so, this caused me to consider the importance community plays within my practice and everyday life. I include a couple of resources on Facebook and a short list of people to follow on Twitter at the end of the post.

Firstly, I am a part of several communities and groups. I am in a group for people who are disabled in addition I am part of a group for people in the LGBTQ+ community. I am in this group because I am apart of the LGBTQ+ community. I am bisexual for context. Further, in being part of these communities I have realized how much I value being a part of something.

I can connect with people who have experiences like mine, in addition to struggles, but I am also connecting with new people. I am apart of something larger than myself and I can learn as I participate.

Secondly, I am also on several online groups related to Paganism and Witchcraft. In these groups everyone practices in some form or another. Some practice a form vastly different from my own and other in similar ways. Even though, these groups are online I enjoy being apart of the community. I enjoy reading people’s experiences, questions, and how helpful everyone is to one another. I have not felt unwelcomed in any of the communities I am a part of.

Finally, I would like to consider that as someone who practices alone these groups both large and small help me connect. I am learning even If I do not post as often as others. I am learning through other questions, answers, suggestions, and more. Moreover, being in all these different community’s help foster a more inclusive space even the topics vary. For example, I realize how these communities have something common or interest in some form like being disabled and LGBTQ+ in both groups people face similar struggles with people in the wider community who fail to understand what it means to be disabled and LGBT+. Additionally, if you are both or more than one of these groups people as a whole fail to understand how you can be in more than one group because of ignorance, lack of education, culture, or something else entirely.  I encourage you to find your own communities either on Twitter, Facebook, and even Instagram. Just know that If something does not feel right about the group or community you do not need to be apart of it. I say this because unfortunately not all people in every community have people’s best interests in mind. If you ever feel uncomfortable, or just get a bad feeling report anything you may think is suspicious to a moderator of that group.

Communities can help us grow, connect, and through our participation we can help others as well be a part of something greater. If you do not feel like you have found a group that is perfectly fine. Participating in a a group or community is not for everyone. Community means different things to different people. If it just a small group where everyone discusses, interacts, where people can share, everyone respects one another, where they are welcome to all then that is a community in one form. I say find what works for you.
