Social media, influence, and witchcraft.

Hi Readers,

This is an older post of mine that I have been wanting to share for quite a while. However, I decided to update the post including a video and add some other points to the discussion. I hope you find it useful and I hope to start a discussion on the subject.

During the past few days, I have been thinking how social media impacts our lives daily. I am regularly checking Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms throughout my day. However, I been really thinking about how much I do it and how I would like to cut down on viewing social media. Keep in mind, that I do not post on my own personal social media accounts as often as I once have. This is mainly for different reasons. One of which is that I am a private person and I do like being social. However, I do not think that people should know every aspect of my life. This being said, I do post things that are going on like major events and other stuff related to my life.

If you are reading this and are wondering what does that have to do with Paganism and Witchcraft? Well, a lot. Firstly, I feel like social media is useful and can help a lot of people. However, I feel that instead of being on social media I could be dedicating time towards an aspect of my Craft. For example, I have stated before that nature is a large part of my practice. Even If I am just walking within my neighborhood I am still appreciating connecting with nature. I am connecting with the elements around me in addition to local plants. Although, I can share pictures and videos of what I am seeing for others I feel like in a sense I would be taking away from the experience of connecting with my local area. This is not to say that I will not share what is around me I often will post the video, and pictures up later. Also, by doing this I am learning more about the seasons within my area.

Moreover, I had some extra time this week to work on something that was not related to school work. I took the extra time to meditate which is something I have not been doing as often. Also, I took more time to work on doing some divination as well.

Lastly, by taking time away from social media I can devote more time to other projects and spells I am working on. I find that taking time away from social media allows me the space to connect to nature along with the land around me. I know that social media can help our craft for example, through someone’s video and post we become inspired by others, yet it can also hurt us in ways we do not realize. I can speak from my own experience that comparing myself to someone else including what we might see online can make me feel like I am not good enough or Witchy enough. However, I feel that social media should be balanced in terms of what we share and how often we share it. In addition, I believe it is up to us as consumers of any media to be mindful and aware of how we can be influenced by what we are exposed to and surrounded by.

I talk more about this in addition to other aspects in the video below:
