My First Solitary Ritual

Hi Readers,

A few points before I get into the heart of this week’s post.

This post was inspired by something I wrote a while ago in addition to a conversation with a friend. Further, I wrote the following post at a separate point in time. In this post, I would like to discuss my first ever simple solitary ritual experience. Eventually, I would like to provide an entire series dedicated to ritual including my first ever written ritual experience. Without for a due here is my first simple Solitary ritual.

Earlier today, I was thinking about ritual. I define ritual as a specific sequence of actions that occur on a frequent basis for a specific purpose. This may or may not be religious in nature and use specific objects depending on what religion or spirituality the individual chooses to practice. We have rituals everyday even If we do not know it. Most of us have some form of routine when we wake up and go to sleep. We do these things everyday some of us at specific times and others may not. However, even when I have gone to church, I have seen things that occurred during specific points and contained repeated actions.

I thought I would share my first ritual experience in the context of the early years of my practice. Keep in mind that I was still learning, and I do not follow any specific tradition within Wicca. I just used what I had available to me in terms of both supplies, and what I learned in books.

My first ritual happened on a Full Moon. At the time, I felt it was a perfect opportunity as I felt that I had done enough research and read several books on the different types of rituals. I wanted to keep it simple and basic. Also, I felt that the Full Moon was a good time and at the time I saw lots of references it to be an opportune time for magick. I did not have an altar then, so I used a piece of furniture. In my case, the top of a dresser. I used a small bowl of salt for Earth, a bowl for water, a candle, and a little bell I found for air. I had a bottle of water for cakes and ail in addition to some crackers I found. Also, I had a small bowl for leaving some of the water and crackers during cakes and ail. I cleaned my space physically as best I could move items off the dresser to make sure I had enough room. I cleansed myself by washing my hands and cleaning my space physically was my way of cleansing it. I used visualization to aid in my cleansing process.  I used my right hand to cast my circle, I played light music for meditation to help me focus and to aid in my meditation to begin my grounding process. Once I felt grounded enough, I proceeded with the ritual. Keep in mind, I had no book to guide me as I wanted to try something simple that wasn’t from a book as I could not find something that I felt fit what I wanted to do. The heart of the ritual was to connect to the Moons energy. I said simple words to call the quarters in addition to the Gods. I faced each direction as I called to each quarter, in addition to looking up towards the sky, even though I was in the room I just focused on the energy of the Full Moon. As I proceeded through the ritual, I could feel the energy around me change the space I was in felt lighter and as If I were somewhere else in a sense. I am finding it difficult to articulate my experience. This said, I noticed how the energy of the Full Moon felt strong for lack of a better term I felt like I had an abundance of energy. I remember just sitting down at one point when it became overwhelming and placed my hands on the ground to help balance myself along with ground. Then, I decided to end the ritual at that point. I felt like I wanted to process the experience.   Before I ended, I offered some of my water and cracker to the Gods in the little bowl I had. Again, this is just something I had read in a book that I wanted to try. The experience somehow felt natural.  The ritual ended in the same way I began just in reverse, I gave thanks to all I had called in during the ritual, just in reverse order. I started in the North, so I began with the West and moved counterclockwise as I had read in several books. Since I experimented a lot, I tried it out.

Overall, my first ritual experience taught me a lot of things from understanding energy, ritual itself, in addition to grounding. I hope that my experience has helped you in some way.

What was your first ritual experience like for you? Was it in a group or as a Solitary practitioner?
